Anyone who has experienced an infected tooth knows the severity of pain and anxiety this ailment can produce. Root canal, or endodontic, therapy is one type of procedure – among several restorative dentistry procedures available in our Las Vegas office – that can be performed to salvage a severely infected tooth.
The professionals at Jason L. Downey, DDS are trained extensively in this type of treatment, shaping their knowledge to best serve the restorative dental needs of Las Vegas and Summerlin, Nevada residents. We pride ourselves on our constant pursuit of remaining up-to-date on all aspects of dentistry, including ongoing education on emerging root canal therapy research.
Combining Technology and Compassion
At Jason L. Downey, DDS, we understand the high level of care and compassion that is inherent to providing patients with a satisfactory root canal therapy experience.
Driving our initial interaction with patients is the transfer of information to educate individuals on their condition and the options that are available to them. This process lays the groundwork for relieving anxiety and addressing any preoperative stress that the patient could be experiencing.
During the initial consultation, patients are educated on the following:
- Their condition and how it affects their dental health.
- The options available to treat their condition.
- Risks versus benefits of treatment.
- Recovery and what to expect after treatment.
- Total cost of treatment, including available payment options.
With this information, our caring staff can help patients decide on the course of action that is most appropriate for their needs. Although patients are referred to a specialist in extreme cases, our office performs procedures in the same way the endodontist does, making our Las Vegas practice a clear choice for root canal therapy.
To first determine whether root canal therapy is needed, Dr. Downey will take x-rays to determine the level of decay or infection plaguing a tooth. If it is determined that the patient needs to undergo the procedure, the infected pulp surrounding the center of the tooth will be removed to clear out the infection and prevent it from spreading to other teeth.
Root Canal Therapy: What to Expect
To make you as comfortable as possible, a local anesthetic is applied before bacteria and debris are cleaned from the inside of the tooth. In some cases, patients may receive a modest amount of medication to ease anxiety.
After the root canal is thoroughly cleaned, the tooth is sealed, and a crown is typically placed over the tooth to protect against any further damage.
To keep costs to a minimum and use our time efficiently, we are often able to perform root canal therapy and, immediately after, ready the tooth for crown placement.
